History
In America’s early history there was a debate between Massachusetts and New Hampshire as to where the boundary lines were. In 1741, this dispute was settled by the King himself, who fixed New Hampshire’s present boundary which was a much larger territory than they had originally claimed. After this settlement, many of the towns which had existed under Massachusetts were rechartered by the province of New Hampshire. In 1771, New Hampshire was divided into five counties, with Hillsborough County being one of them. Hillsborough County was organized on May 6, 1771 and named in honor of Wills Hill, the Earl of Hillsborough. By 1823, 42 townships had been formed within Hillsborough County. During the 1800s, two of the towns in Hillsborough’s Counties became the largest in the state. During this period, Manchester became known as the textile capital of the United States, employing over 17,000 people and producing more than four million yards of cloth per week at its peak. Nashua became Hillsborough County’s second largest city in the county and also the state after becoming the first inland town to be settled in New Hampshire.
