History

The earliest settlers of Cheshire County came from the south along the Connecticut River and encountered the “Squakheag” tribe of Native Americans who remained in the area until 1720. Cheshire County’s first Inferior Court met in October of 1771 and the Superior Court met in 1772. In 1771, the New Hampshire province was divided into five counties, one of which was named Cheshire. Cheshire was named after a county in the west of England that was well known for their manufacture of cheese, hence the name. On July 5, 1827, Cheshire County was divided, leaving Cheshire County with its present limits. The northern portion of the county took on the name of Sullivan County. The newly formed Cheshire County was bordered by Sullivan County to the north, Hillsborough County to the east, the State of Massachusetts to the south, and the west bank of the Connecticut River to the west. During this year, the town of Keene became the shire-town or county seat of Cheshire County. By the end of the 1800’s Cheshire County had grown to contain twenty-three towns and over 2836 farms.
